Baseball officially became a part of Mariners Athletics in 2001 and was instated as a varsity club. At this time, the team competed under the Mariners banner in the BC Colleges' Baseball League. Shortly after in 2002, the Canadian Collegiate Baseball Conference (CCBC) was formed, where the Mariners have competed since. Since the team's inception, the Mariners parent organization has changed three times. Originally the Malaspina University-College Mariners, followed by the Vancouver Island Baseball Institute Mariners, and today known as the Vancouver Island University Mariners. The Mariners have won the CCBC championship once in 2010.
The VIU Mariners are a collegiate baseball team consisting of post-secondary academic and trades students in the mid to north Vancouver Island region. They compete in the Canadian Collegiate Baseball Conference, a wood bat collegiate league that covers British Columbia and Alberta. The regular season runs from mid March to mid May.
